The market volume for coniferous roundwood in Germany fluctuated between 2018 and 2023. After a dip to 55.6 million m³ in 2019, it recovered steadily, reaching a peak of 61.0 million m³ in 2022. This expansion was supported by a rise in domestic production, which grew from 55.3 million m³ in 2018 to 65.2 million m³ in 2022.

A sharp reversal followed in 2023 as the market volume contracted by 15% to 51.6 million m³, driven by a significant drop in production. By 2024, adverse weather conditions hampered timber harvesting, reducing supply by 13.3% and pushing coniferous roundwood prices above €130 per cubic meter. Concurrently, weak construction activity, marked by falling building permits and sawnwood production, further dampened demand.

Roundwood coniferous production in Germany increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Germany produced 63 003 K m³ of roundwood coniferous, marking a significant 12.0% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 31.1%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 9.4%.

In 2020, the output of roundwood coniferous in Germany was valued at 4 454 M $ US, showing a modest increase of 3.0% from the previous year. Cross-border shipments of roundwood coniferous from Germany increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 12 024 K m³, representing a substantial 60.2% uptick compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 313.6%, with a CAGR of 60.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the principal destinations for Germany's roundwood coniferous exports in kind were China (36.1% of exports), Austria (29.4% of exports), and Belgium (11.8% of exports). Together, these three countries accounted for 77.3% of total export flows.

Roundwood coniferous deliveries from Germany increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 850.1 M $ US, showing a sharp gain of 47.2% versus the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 260%, equating to an annualized rate of 53.3%.

Roundwood coniferous imports into Germany declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports were recorded at 5 703 K m³, corresponding to a robust drop of 16.9% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 30.9%, with a CAGR of 11.6%. The peak was in 2018 at 8 330 K m³, which saw a 1.0% increase, but this was followed by the largest decline of 17.6% in 2019.

In the period from 2017 to 2020, the principal sources for Germany's roundwood coniferous imports in kind were Czechia (35.2% of imports), Poland (28.0% of imports), and Norway (7.6% of imports). Together, these three countries made up 70.7% of total import flows.

Imported roundwood coniferous volumes in Germany declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 333.9 M $ US, representing a 20.6% decline compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 42.2%, with a CAGR of 16.7%.
