Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Polish coniferous roundwood market remained stable with a slight upward trend. Timber harvesting increased to 41.6 million m³ in 2018, supported by State Forests which supply over 90% of domestic raw material. Record roundwood prices emerged due to post-hurricane cleanup in Bory Tucholskie, raising production costs for wood industries. High prices persisted into 2019, and by 2020, rising exports to China—reaching 45% of total exports—intensified pressure on the local supply.

Market volume jumped by over 7% in 2021, largely because Russia’s log export ban tightened global softwood availability, boosting demand for Polish roundwood. In 2022, the government revised timber sales rules, directing 70% of raw material through an online portal and 30% to auctions, easing entry for new entrepreneurs. However, EU sanctions on Russian and Belarusian timber, coupled with record-high domestic prices, began to dampen the market. By 2023, weakened demand—both locally and from abroad—pushed prices down and contracted market volume by roughly 9%, accompanied by a continued slide in wood industry output.
