The coniferous roundwood market in Bosnia and Herzegovina, supported by the country's extensive forest cover of over 53% and a timber sector with annual production worth more than €400 million, began the period at 2.4 million m³ in 2018. Market volume then entered a phase of gradual contraction, declining to 2.3 million m³ in 2019 and 2.2 million m³ in 2020, before falling more sharply to 2.1 million m³ in 2021.

A shift occurred in 2022 when the government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina imposed a temporary ban on the export of firewood and certain wood products until the end of the year to stabilize domestic supply amid rising global demand. This policy directly curtailed export flows and encouraged greater retention of raw materials for the local market. Consequently, despite a drop in domestic production, a significant increase in imports contributed to a slight rebound in total market volume to 2.1 million m³ that year.

The market resumed its downward trajectory in 2023, contracting to 2.0 million m³. The sustained low level of exports and relatively high imports reflected the ongoing adjustment to the previous year's trade restrictions. From 2018 to 2023, the total market volume for coniferous roundwood contracted by approximately 14%.

In 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina produced 2 019 thousand cubic meters of coniferous roundwood, marking a 5.0% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production fell by 13%, which translates to an average annual decline of 4.5%. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with an 8.9% decrease, while 2020 saw a slight increase of 0.5%.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's coniferous roundwood production value has risen for the second year in a row. In 2021, the output was valued at 233.5 million US dollars, representing a 12.9% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production value grew by 5.1%, averaging a 1.7% annual growth rate. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 197.4 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 11.1%.

In 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 30.0 thousand cubic meters of coniferous roundwood, a 12.0% decrease from the year before. From 2018 to 2021, exports dropped by 24%, with an average annual decline of 8.7%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 22.8 thousand cubic meters, which experienced the sharpest fall of 42.2%. However, exports rebounded in 2020 with a 49.4% increase.

Between 2018 and 2021, Serbia, Slovenia, and Austria were the top destinations for Bosnia and Herzegovina's coniferous roundwood exports by volume. Serbia accounted for 43.8% of exports, Slovenia for 19.8%, and Austria for 9.2%, together making up 72.8% of total export flows.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's coniferous roundwood export value has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 3 474 thousand US dollars, up 4.6% from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, however, export value decreased by 8.1%, with an average annual decline of 2.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 2 132 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest drop of 43.6%. In contrast, 2020 experienced a significant increase of 55.8%.

From 2018 to 2021, Serbia, Slovenia, and Montenegro were the leading partners in terms of export value for Bosnia and Herzegovina's coniferous roundwood. Serbia contributed 39.4% of export value, Slovenia 15.5%, and Montenegro 8.0%, collectively accounting for 62.9% of total export flows.

In 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina imported 90.1 thousand cubic meters of coniferous roundwood, a 39.5% decrease from 2020. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 199.4 thousand cubic meters, which also saw the largest increase of 176.6%.

During the 2018-2021 period, Czechia, Slovenia, and Hungary were the primary sources for Bosnia and Herzegovina's coniferous roundwood imports by volume. Czechia accounted for 61.7% of imports, Slovenia for 18.1%, and Hungary for 14.2%, together representing 93.9% of total import flows.

In 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina's coniferous roundwood imports reached 11 157 thousand US dollars, showing a modest increase of 8.4% from the previous year. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 14 767 thousand US dollars, which experienced the largest increase of 158.2%. The most significant decline occurred in 2020, with a 30.3% drop.
