The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused temporary production disruptions and supply chain issues, but the industry's rapid response enabled a recovery in volumes during the second half of the year. Throughout this period, state-owned chemical groups like Grupa Azoty maintained a dominant position in securing raw material supply for the sector.

A sharp expansion occurred in 2021, with market volume surging to 126 thousand tonnes. This growth was primarily driven by increased production capacities within the Polish plastics industry, which boosted the supply of finished products. This rise took place despite broader European polymer supply chain disruptions that elevated material costs for manufacturers.

Beginning in 2022, the market entered a phase of contraction, with volume declining to 123 thousand tonnes that year and further to 110 thousand tonnes by 2024. The outbreak of war in Ukraine introduced significant political and economic uncertainty, leading to sharp increases in energy and raw material prices that adversely affected production profitability. Planned investments in new ethylene production capacity aim to enhance domestic monomer supply in the longer term, but the immediate aftermath of the war resulted in logistical constraints and material shortages that contributed to the market's decline.

In 2020, Poland produced 122.4 thousand tonnes of rigid plastic tubes, pipes and hoses made from polyethylene (PE), remaining relatively stable compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 6.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.3%. The peak was reached in 2018 at 127.6 thousand tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 11.4%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest decline of 4.5%.
