This increase was supported by a recovery in domestic production after years of decline, alongside international factors such as export restrictions from India which impacted global prices and availability.

After peaking in 2020, the market volume contracted to 1.1 million tonnes by 2023. This decline occurred despite a significant rise in domestic output, driven by government agricultural policies aimed at strengthening food sovereignty, which increased the share of locally produced rice to 68% of the market. Simultaneously, imports fell due to global supply constraints and high international prices.

Sown area continued to expand, reaching 123 thousand hectares in 2023-2024, reflecting the sector's push for greater self-sufficiency. The industry faced persistent challenges in financing and input supply, even as it targeted further growth and potential export opportunities.
