The volume of Egypt's rice market showed considerable variation from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 3.2 million tons in 2018, it leaped to 5.1 million tons the following year. After a modest contraction to 4.9 million tons in 2020 and a further decline to 4.3 million tons in 2021, the market stabilized at around 4.4 million tons in 2022.

A major expansion occurred in 2023, with market volume reaching 6.3 million tons. This growth was primarily fueled by a significant increase in domestic production, as farmers cultivated rice beyond the officially allotted areas. This expansion was motivated by the high profitability experienced from the barley crop in the preceding season, leading to a larger harvest for the 2023/2024 cycle.
