The raw silk market in the Americas began the period at a high volume of 744 tons in 2018, supported by a 22% increase in U.S. production and strong domestic demand in North America. However, this level was not sustained, as market size fell sharply to 537 tons in 2019 and further to 430 tons in 2020.

A modest recovery occurred in 2021, with market volume rising to 446 tons, while production stabilized near 373 tons. The downward trend resumed in 2022, with the market shrinking to 402 tons, and continued in 2023 to 386 tons, even as production increased by 10% that year.

Raw silk production in the Americas declined for the second year in a row. In 2019, production stood at 469.0 tonnes, but by 2020 it had dropped to 377.0 tonnes, marking a 19.6% decrease. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 37.2%, with an average annual decline of 14.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 650.0 tonnes, which represented an 8.3% increase from the previous year. However, the sharpest drop occurred in 2019, when production fell by 27.8%.

Imports raw silk to Americas

Imports in kind, kg

Raw silk imports to the Americas also declined for the second consecutive year. In 2019, imports were 68 000 kg, but by 2020 they had decreased to 53 333 kg, a 21.6% drop. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 42%, with an average annual decline of 16.6%. The peak import volume was in 2018 at 94 347 kg, which was a 2.7% increase from 2017. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when imports dropped by 27.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the Americas' raw silk imports were heavily concentrated on China, which accounted for 96.1% of total imports by volume.

The value of raw silk imports to the Americas declined for the second year running. In 2019, imports were valued at 3 440 thousand US dollars, but by 2020 this had fallen to 2 232 thousand US dollars, a 35.1% decrease. From 2017 to 2020, import value dropped by 46.9%, with an average annual decline of 19.0%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 5 265 thousand US dollars, which was a 25.3% increase from the previous year.
