Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the Peruvian market for raw sheep and lamb skins saw modest growth in volume, reaching 11 662 tons in 2019. This increase was supported by a continued decline in exports, which fell from 437 tons to 349 tons over the period. Global factors played a role, as a worldwide decrease in sheepskin prices during 2018 made exports less profitable, encouraging more supply to remain in the domestic market.

The market contracted in 2020 to 11 454 tons, as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and dampened demand, leading to a sharp drop in both production and exports. A recovery followed in 2021, with market volume rising to 11 731 tons, aided by a rebound in global demand for fine sheepskins, particularly in European markets, which helped lift production and export volumes from their lows.

In the later years, market volume stabilized near 11 900 tons. Exports showed volatility, peaking in 2022, which momentarily reduced domestic availability. By 2023, production and market volume had recovered. Looking ahead, Peru's agreement to begin exporting donkey and horse hides to China from July 2024 reflects broader export development for hides and skins, though it does not directly involve sheepskins.
