Earlier Report Observations

The market for dried shelled broad and horse beans in Peru experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After a period of modest growth, domestic market volume reached a peak of 84 317 t in 2022, before contracting to 77 796 t the following year. This movement was closely tied to changes in production levels and export dynamics, with the latter being shaped by several specific developments.

The 2022 expansion in domestic market volume coincided with a policy emphasis from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) directing 83% of legume production toward internal consumption, which limited export supply and bolstered local availability. Conversely, the 2023 market contraction was driven by a rebound in export volumes alongside a drop in production. That year saw the first shipment of 30 t of dried shelled beans to Asia and a significant increase in exports to South Korea, which captured over 41% of shipments in the first half, redirecting product away from the domestic market.

Entering 2024, the export channel remained active with shipments growing 27% in the first half, reaching 17 different destinations led by the United States. The entry of new exporters such as Agro Fergi SAC and Dos Marías EIRL diversified the trade landscape, while the Ministry launched a new bean variety 'INIA 444 SIWINA' aimed at supporting small and medium farmers.
