Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, Nigerien authorities imposed a ban on livestock exports ahead of the Tabaski festival to ensure the availability of sacrificial animals for local households. This measure, aimed at reducing sheep prices, likely supported domestic slaughter supply, contributing to the production of 2,402 t of raw sheep and lamb skins and a market volume of 2,302 t that year.

Market volume fluctuated over the following years, peaking at 2,428 t in 2020 before declining in 2021 and 2022, then partially recovering to 2,294 t in 2023. Production followed a similar pattern, reaching its highest point of 2,456 t in 2020.

By 2024, increased focus on the agropastoral sector was evident through the annual SAHEL-NIGER exhibition, which brought together value chain actors, and through stated government commitments to a deep transformation of the sector led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
