The ASEAN market for raw sheep and lamb skins grew to 17 668 t in 2019 but fell sharply to 14 050 t in 2020.

Market volume stabilized near 13 932 t in 2021, pressured by increased environmental consciousness among Thai consumers, who showed a preference for products without animal ingredients, reducing demand for sheep-derived materials. After a recovery to 15 679 t in 2022, the market contracted again to 14 082 t in 2023.

In 2024, the livestock sector in Thailand and Malaysia saw rising demand for sheep meat, supporting imports and domestic production, which influenced the supply chain for raw skins. Consumer trends across the region also continued shifting toward sustainable and ethical consumption, affecting demand for animal-derived products.

Raw sheep and lamb skins production in ASEAN declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 12 508 tonnes, marking a significant 21.2% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 14.8%, which translates to an annualized decline of 5.2%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 18 412 tonnes, with that year also seeing the largest increase of 25.5%.

Exports in value terms reached their peak in 2018 at 1 552 thousand US dollars and fell to their lowest point in 2020 at 74 thousand US dollars, showing a 21-fold swing.
