Earlier Report Observations
The market for raw sheep and lamb skins in Afghanistan began the period at 17 417 t in 2018, facing political instability and shifting global preferences that dampened trade in karakul skins. Despite drought and adverse climatic conditions challenging sheep farming, the market volume edged up to 17 557 t in 2019. However, persistent political and security instability reduced private investment and demand, pulling the market down to 17 216 t in 2020.
From 2021 onward, the absence of government support for the skins and livestock industry, along with changes in export regulations due to international sanctions, pushed the market lower to 16 152 t. In 2022, fluctuations in the Afghani exchange rate and domestic inflation raised production costs, while feed shortages constrained supply, leading to a further drop to 15 088 t. By 2023, the market had contracted to 13 242 t, reflecting continued decline in production alongside rising exports.
