Earlier Report Observations

Production of raw or retted, not spun flax in Belarus increased from 39 508 tons in 2018 to 47 778 tons in 2020. This growth was supported by the inclusion of flax in exchange trading on the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange, which improved market access, and a continued focus on technological discipline to boost flax fiber yield and quality.

Output dropped sharply to 35 682 tons in 2021, a year that nonetheless saw the launch of an ambitious project for full flax processing aimed at closing the production chain and increasing value-added exports. Small and medium private sewing organizations also began processing customer-supplied raw materials, creating new segments. In 2022, production rebounded to 47 626 tons, buoyed by the exchange-trading mechanism and the ongoing development of domestic processing.

The market volume fell to 37 225 tons in 2023, partly due to EU import duties on flax oil and meal that took effect in mid-2024 and indirectly restricted export opportunities from the region. During this period, state support for agricultural organizations and efforts to improve flax cultivation practices continued.
