Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the German sugar market volume increased from 30 415 thousand tons to 34 372 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by the abolition of the EU sugar production quota system, which had previously limited output. The liberalization allowed domestic production to expand and intensified market competition.

In 2020, market volume decreased to 33 180 thousand tons due to global supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The following year, volume recovered strongly to 36 978 thousand tons as the industry adapted its operations and logistics, while consumer demand shifted toward sustainably and regionally produced sugars.

Market volume fell to 32 496 thousand tons in 2022 before rebounding to 36 148 thousand tons in 2023. The later growth was supported by ongoing market liberalization, continued investment in processing efficiency and sustainable practices, and stable infrastructure with 18 refineries operating.
