The German molasses market stood at 421 thousand tons in 2018 before contracting to 322 thousand tons in 2019. This decline was driven by a 17% drop in European sugar beet production due to reduced cultivation area, which tightened molasses availability. Concurrently, European Commission plans to authorize molasses for biofuel production placed additional strain on supply for the food and feed industries.

Market volume recovered to 368 thousand tons in 2020 and surged to 511 thousand tons in 2021. Despite ongoing drought and falling cultivation areas, which doubled global sugar and molasses prices, lobbying by European associations against diverting molasses to biofuels helped preserve it for the food market. In 2021, domestic molasses production increased even as local stocks were sold out, raising reliance on imports.

Growth continued to 585 thousand tons in 2022 and 632 thousand tons in 2023. Molasses production in 2022 fell by up to 40% year-on-year due to delayed harvests and smaller beet areas, but this was offset by the anticipated return of U.S. exporters to supply Europe and a sharp drop in German molasses exports. By 2023, the market reached its highest volume in the period, supported by stable prices and adaptation to global disruptions such as the war in Ukraine.

Molasses production in Germany fell for the third year in a row. In 2020, Germany produced 749.9 K t of molasses, down 2.7% from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, production dropped by 13.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.6%.

Exports molasses from Germany

Exports in kind, K t

After two years of growth, Germany's molasses exports declined. In 2020, exports totaled 495.3 K t, a 16.0% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports rose by 2.9%, averaging 1.0% per year. The peak was in 2019 at 589.9 K t, with the largest increase of 13.4% also occurring that year.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy were the main markets for Germany's molasses exports by volume. The Netherlands accounted for 55.1% of exports, Belgium for 16.7%, and Italy for 16.4%, together making up 88.1% of total export flows.

Exports in value, K $ US

Following two years of increase, Germany's molasses export volumes declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 82 812 K $ US, a sharp drop of 14.4% compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, exports grew by 8.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 96 753 K $ US, and the largest increase of 17.2% occurred in 2018.

Throughout 2017–2020, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy remained the key destinations for Germany's molasses exports by value. The Netherlands held 55.5% of export value, Belgium 16.2%, and Italy 16.1%, collectively representing 87.8% of total export flows.

Imports molasses to Germany

After two years of growth, Germany's molasses imports decreased. In 2020, imports were 113.2 K t, down 19.6% from 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports fell by 11.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.0%. The maximum volume was in 2019 at 140.8 K t, and the largest increase of 7.3% also took place that year.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, India, and Poland were the primary suppliers of molasses to Germany by volume. The Netherlands contributed 32.0% of imports, India 20.4%, and Poland 8.5%, together accounting for 60.9% of total import flows.

Germany's molasses imports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 19 084 K $ US, a slight reduction of 1.3% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 6%, averaging a 2.0% annual decline.

In 2017–2020, the Netherlands, India, and Nicaragua formed the main cluster of markets for Germany's molasses imports by value. The Netherlands accounted for 30.9% of import value, India for 20.2%, and Nicaragua for 6.6%, with a combined share of 57.7% of total import flows.
