Earlier Report Observations

The market for raw bovine and equine hides and skins in Myanmar showed steady growth from 2018 to 2021. Market volume increased from 13 665 tonnes in 2018 to 19 611 tonnes in 2021, representing a 43% rise over four years. This growth was primarily driven by rising domestic production, which grew from 18 787 tonnes to 20 046 tonnes over the same period. Imports, although fluctuating, accounted for only a small share of the market, while exports fell from 5 394 tonnes in 2018 to 461 tonnes in 2021, contributing to greater domestic availability.

After peaking in 2021, market volume began to contract, dropping to 19 073 tonnes in 2022 and 18 630 tonnes in 2023. This decline of 2.7% and 2.3% respectively coincided with a rise in exports, which increased to 1 300 tonnes in 2022 and 1 601 tonnes in 2023. Production remained stable at around 20 000 tonnes, peaking at 20 373 tonnes in 2022 before a slight decrease to 20 221 tonnes in 2023. Thus, increased exports led to a reduction in domestic supply.
