Earlier Report Observations

The U.S. safflower seed market reached a record volume of 107 thousand tons in 2018, driven by favorable agronomic conditions and farmer preference for conventional varieties that offered stable yields. Production then contracted over the next two years, falling to 69 thousand tons by 2020, as global supply-chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic affected availability and logistics.

After a further dip in 2021, the market recovered to 84 thousand tons in 2022 with the stabilization of supply chains and the adoption of improved processing technologies. However, volume declined again to 68 thousand tons in 2023 amid persistent supply-chain challenges and growing demand for safflower derivatives in cosmetics and functional foods.

In 2024, a notable development was the offtake agreement signed by Moolec with a global partner for the supply of its GLASO™ safflower oil for dietary supplements, functional foods, cosmetics, and animal nutrition in the U.S. This period also saw an 8.6% rise in average crop yield and lower import and export prices influenced by improved global harvest prospects.
