Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the rapeseed market in Iran experienced shifts in supply sources. In 2018, state-backed guaranteed purchases by the specialized state trading company and the promotion of rapeseed as a water-efficient alternative crop supported domestic production of 424 thousand tons. However, production declined in the following two years, falling to 295 thousand tons in 2020, while imports surged to 160 thousand tons in 2020, keeping the overall market volume above 450 thousand tons.

The market contracted sharply in 2021 to 245 thousand tons as imports dropped to just 7 thousand tons, despite continued state guaranteed purchases that helped maintain domestic output at 238 thousand tons. In 2022, updated import regulations, which added the Ministry of Health to oversight committees and revised rules for oilseed imports, effectively restricted foreign supply, leading to zero imports and a further market decline to 215 thousand tons. A recovery followed in 2023 when the government raised the guaranteed purchase price for rapeseed to 30,000 tomans per unit to support farmers and compete with wheat, stimulating production to 290 thousand tons and lifting the market volume to 302 thousand tons.

In 2024, factors such as the adoption of a new trade bill with broad economic law changes and continued state procurement policies continue to shape the rapeseed market environment.
