The rapeseed market in Eastern Africa experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2021. Market volume fell from 43 427 metric tons in 2018 to 41 586 metric tons in 2019, then recovered to 47 378 metric tons in 2020 before dropping sharply to 33 457 metric tons in 2021.

From 2022 to 2023, the market stabilized and then grew slightly, reaching 34 665 metric tons in 2023. This period was marked by persistent high costs for agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and seeds, which constrained production capacity. Shifts in land use in Kenya also posed challenges for rapeseed cultivation. In 2023, continued high input and labor costs, along with weather conditions, affected output, but market demand helped support consumption volumes.

After a two-year decline, rapeseed production in Eastern Africa rebounded. In 2020, the region produced 48,870 tonnes of rapeseed, marking a 16.2% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 42,046 tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 10.6% drop.

Exports rapeseed from Eastern Africa

The market experienced significant fluctuations during this period. Export volumes reached their peak in 2018 at 2,101 tonnes and fell to their lowest point in 2019 at 509 tonnes, representing a 4.1-fold difference. In 2020, rapeseed exports from Eastern Africa amounted to 1,589 tonnes, showing a sharp increase of 212.4% compared to 2019. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 with a 75.8% decrease.

The market showed notable volatility during this period. Export values reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2020, with a 2.9-fold fluctuation between these years. In 2020, Eastern Africa's rapeseed export value totaled 612.4 thousand US dollars, reflecting a steep 77.0% increase compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with an 11.0% decrease, while the largest increase was recorded in 2018 with an 81.1% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Indonesia (59.6% of export value), Vietnam (19.3%), and South Africa (7.1%) remained the principal buyers of rapeseed from Eastern Africa, jointly accounting for 86.1% of total export value.

Imports rapeseed to Eastern Africa

The market demonstrated volatility over the observed period. Import volumes peaked in 2018 at 469 tonnes and dropped to their lowest point in 2019 at 49 tonnes, a 9.6-fold difference. In 2020, rapeseed imports into Eastern Africa reached 97 tonnes, corresponding to a sharp 98.8% increase compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 with an 89.6% decrease, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 442.4% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, rapeseed imports by volume into Eastern Africa were not highly concentrated. New Zealand (14.4% of import volume), the United Kingdom (11.5%), and Italy (6.6%) together accounted for only 32.5% of total import flows.

From 2017 to 2020, New Zealand (21.5% of import value), the United Kingdom (18.0%), and Austria (14.3%) remained the leading sources in Eastern Africa's rapeseed import structure by value, with a combined share of 53.8% of total import flows.
