Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2021, the market volume for rapeseed, colza or mustard oil and fractions in MERCOSUR grew from 42.1 thousand tons to 64.9 thousand tons. This increase was driven by a shift in consumer preferences toward healthier vegetable oils, which raised demand. In 2020, regulatory harmonization of food standards within MERCOSUR facilitated intraregional trade, improving market access. By 2021, the expansion of major companies' portfolios to cater to organic demand and heightened consumer health awareness further stimulated consumption.

After 2021, the market volume declined, reaching 37.6 thousand tons in 2023 despite record production of 119.4 thousand tons. This contraction was due to a sharp rise in exports, which surged from 27.5 thousand tons in 2021 to 97.4 thousand tons in 2023. The Ukraine conflict in 2022 caused global disruptions in vegetable oil supply chains, elevating demand for exports from MERCOSUR. Simultaneously, the growth of rapeseed cultivation in Argentina, focused on biofuel production, increased the raw material availability for export.
