The French rapeseed, colza or mustard oil and fractions market volume began the period at 744 thousand tons in 2018, the same year a sector-wide plan was launched to strengthen the oilseed-protein crop value chain, which included a large-scale shift to low-erucic acid rapeseed varieties. Market volume then contracted to 646 thousand tons in 2019, a decline primarily linked to a 10% drop in domestic rapeseed oil production that year. The downward trend continued in 2020, with the market shrinking further to 601 thousand tons.

Market volume stabilized at around 605 thousand tons in 2021, coinciding with the progressive implementation of new extended producer responsibility rules for used oils. Growth resumed in 2022, reaching 655 thousand tons, driven by favorable weather conditions for the rapeseed crop and a temporary government authorization allowing sunflower oil to be replaced by rapeseed oil in food and cosmetic products without relabeling, which bolstered demand amid supply disruptions. The expansion continued into 2023, with market volume rising to 663 thousand tons, supported by a 10% increase in the area sown with rapeseed in France, which boosted domestic production.
