Earlier Report Observations

The French market for unmodified sesame oil and its fractions grew from 6 798 t in 2018 to a peak of 7 750 t in 2020. This expansion was primarily fueled by a sustained consumer shift toward healthy, cold-pressed, and chemically unprocessed oils, a trend reflected in rising demand for clean-label products globally.

After 2020, the market volume contracted, falling to 6 191 t in 2022. The decline coincided with the enforcement of Decree No. 2021-1395 on used oil management and extended producer responsibility, which imposed stricter environmental and cost burdens on domestic producers. This period also followed heightened safety controls and product recalls initiated in 2020 after ethylene oxide contamination was found in imported sesame seeds.

A partial recovery to 6 631 t occurred in 2023. Despite rising international prices putting pressure on the market, this rebound was supported by growing French consumer interest in premium, artisanal, and organic sesame oils, with established players like La Tourangelle expanding their offerings in this segment.
