Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the Russian provitamins and vitamins market expanded as consumer demand was reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. While domestic production remained relatively low, the market volume grew to 12 917 t in 2020, supported by high imports. The pandemic directly increased consumption of vitamins and dietary supplements for immune support, and the rise of online sales improved product accessibility. During this period, regulatory changes for supplements and investments in production capacity laid the groundwork for future market shifts.

A sharp market expansion to 15 234 t occurred in 2021, driven by sustained high consumer demand with over half of Russians using dietary supplements. New rules for the free provision of vitamins to certain worker categories further stimulated consumption. However, in 2022, sanctions and the exit of major foreign producers like Herbalife Nutrition and Bayer led to a severe contraction, slashing market volume by 31.8% to 10 395 t. The sudden drop in imports, a key market component, was the primary cause, although it subsequently encouraged the strengthening of domestic manufacturers.

The market began recovering in 2023, reaching 10 775 t, fueled by an 83.5% surge in capital investment into production modernization and the arrival of new products and brands. This recovery accelerated dramatically in 2024, with market volume jumping 33.2% to 14 348 t. This growth was underpinned by a 6% increase in domestic supplement production, ongoing investment, and portfolio expansion by manufacturers and pharmacy chains with their own brands. By 2025, domestic production stabilized at 707 t, indicating a consolidation phase after the rapid post-sanction adjustment.
