Exports fresh cheese and curd from Sweden

In 2020, Sweden exported 8,992 tonnes of fresh cheese and curd to foreign markets, representing a 1.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 3.5%, with an average annual growth rate of -1.2%. The most significant drop occurred in 2018, when exports fell by 2.2%, while 2019 saw a modest increase of 0.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Denmark and Finland were the primary destinations for Sweden's fresh cheese and curd exports in volume terms, together accounting for 96.4% of total shipments. Other trading partners played a much smaller role during this period.

Exports in value, M $ US

Following two years of decline, Sweden's fresh cheese and curd exports in value terms rebounded in 2020. The country exported $22.6 million worth of these products, marking a moderate increase of 4.6% from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 11.7%, with an average annual decline of 4.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at $21.6 million, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with an 8.5% decrease.

Throughout 2017-2020, Finland and Denmark remained the key markets for Sweden's fresh cheese and curd exports in value terms, jointly representing 94.1% of total export revenue. Other partners each held significantly smaller shares of the market.

Sweden's imports of fresh cheese and curd in volume terms grew for the second consecutive year in 2020. Import volume reached 29,822 tonnes, showing a robust increase of 16.4% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 24.8%, equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 7.7%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 23,323 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 2.4% during the period.

From 2017 to 2020, Denmark, Germany, and Italy were the main sources of Sweden's fresh cheese and curd imports in volume terms. Denmark accounted for 34.9% of imports, Germany for 34.2%, and Italy for 13.0%. Together, these three countries represented 82.0% of total import volume during this period.

Sweden's imports of fresh cheese and curd in value terms increased for the third year in a row in 2020. Import value reached $107.3 million, reflecting a substantial rise of 20.2% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 28.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.8%.

During 2017-2020, Denmark, Germany, and Italy continued to be the principal suppliers of fresh cheese and curd to Sweden in value terms. Denmark held a 39.8% share of import value, Germany accounted for 25.5%, and Italy represented 16.7%. Collectively, these three countries made up 81.9% of Sweden's total import value for these products.
