Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the Italian processed liquid milk market showed initial growth, with volume reaching 4 022 thousand tons in 2018, supported by a recovery in the dairy sector led by strong cheese segment demand. It expanded further to 4 416 thousand tons in 2019 before contracting to 4 220 thousand tons in 2020, as geopolitical uncertainty, tighter environmental constraints, and commodity price volatility introduced risk and suppressed activity.

A sharp drop to 2 833 thousand tons occurred in 2021, directly linked to soaring production costs, feed supply difficulties, and declining domestic consumption of dairy products. Recovery began in 2022, with volume rising to 3 006 thousand tons despite the Russia-Ukraine war's impact on energy and raw material expenses. This turnaround was aided by shifting consumer preferences toward health-oriented products like lactose-free and extended-shelf-life milk, alongside the expansion of major processors. Growth continued to 3 332 thousand tons in 2023, driven by strong Italian dairy exports at higher unit prices and easing feed costs due to ample global stocks. The market reached 3 716 thousand tons in 2024, fueled by ongoing sector restructuring and investments aimed at improving milk producer remuneration.
