Market volume for primary sugar crops in Serbia remained near 2.3 million tonnes in 2018 and 2019, then declined to around 2 million tonnes in 2020 and 2021. A sharp contraction to 1.7 million tonnes occurred in 2022, before production rebounded to 2 million tonnes in 2023.

The rebound in 2023, a 22% increase from the previous year, was supported by forward contracting for the next season and an anticipated harvest of around two million tonnes. However, the sugar industry continued to face pressure from rising energy costs, which had weighed on profitability in earlier years.

Serbia's sugar sector, supplied by four beet processing plants, is geared toward domestic consumption and occasional exports. In recent years, global climate variability and market turbulence have directly affected beet yield and quality, adding to the sector's operational challenges.
