Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for primary sugar crops in Mozambique expanded from 3 139 тыс. т in 2018 to 3 913 тыс. т in 2019. This growth was driven by the country's commercial farming sector, which, though comprising only about 400 large-scale farmers, focused on high-value crop chains including sugarcane, supporting a near-doubling of national sugar output over the preceding five-year period.

After a drop to 2 738 тыс. т in 2020, the market saw a modest recovery to 2 782 тыс. т in 2021, coinciding with the revision of the National Development Strategy 2025-2044 that prioritized modernization and growth in the primary agricultural sector. Production increased further to 2 969 тыс. т in 2022 as major sugar mills like Xinavane and Mafambisse maintained operations, ensuring supply despite a temporary halt at the Maragra mill due to flooding.

A severe decline to 1 621 тыс. т occurred in 2023, directly attributable to climate shocks. Drought and the El Niño phenomenon caused the loss of approximately 8 000 hectares of sugarcane in the Nhamatanda district, significantly impacting harvest volumes and overall market supply.
