Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the Serbian market for prepared or preserved pork contracted from 18,606 t to 12,462 t, reaching its lowest point in 2022. This downward trend began alongside export difficulties to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019 due to an African swine fever ban, which disrupted trade flows for processed meat products. The subsequent introduction of new hygiene bylaws aligned with EU legislation in 2020, supported by FAO and EBRD, aimed to modernize the meat processing sector by improving food safety standards and competitiveness.

Enhanced regulations, including the integration of antimicrobial resistance surveillance into national programs in 2020 and derogations for small traditional producers in 2021, facilitated market access and helped stabilize the industry. These developments coincided with a gradual recovery in market volume to 12,462 t in 2023, following a trough of 11,024 t the previous year.

In 2024, Serbian authorities implemented a voluntary 'Serbian Quality Label' scheme for meat products and enforced stricter measures for early detection and control of African swine fever, further aligning domestic standards with EU requirements to bolster food safety and trade prospects.
