The ASEAN market for prepared and preserved pork contracted sharply between 2018 and 2020, with volume falling from 54 thousand tonnes to 28 thousand tonnes. This decline was mirrored in market value, which dropped by over $50 million.

A recovery began in 2021 and accelerated in 2022, lifting market volume to 44 thousand tonnes. This rebound coincided with global supply chain disruptions from the war in Ukraine, which pressured food markets, and a broader consumer trend towards convenient, processed meat products with longer shelf lives.

In 2023, market volume retreated to 38 thousand tonnes, influenced by a significant reduction in import demand within key markets like Indonesia. However, higher unit prices meant the market's total value continued to climb, reaching $252 million.

ASEAN's production of prepared or preserved pork and offal has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 16,870 tonnes, marking a sharp 29.4% drop compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 38%, which translates to an annualized decline of 14.7%.

The value of prepared or preserved pork and offal production in ASEAN decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 144.3 million US dollars, down 29.8% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value declined by 30.1%, with an annualized rate of 11.3%. The peak was reached in 2018 at 218.1 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 5.6%.

ASEAN's exports of prepared or preserved pork and offal fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 8,347 tonnes, a 4.9% decrease from the prior year. From 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 3.7%, averaging an annual decline of 1.3%. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 8,788 tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 1.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates were the top destinations for exports in volume terms. Japan accounted for 43.5% of exports, Hong Kong for 11.1%, and the UAE for 4.5%, together making up 59.1% of total flows.

After two years of growth, ASEAN's exports of prepared or preserved pork and offal in value terms declined in 2020. Exports amounted to 71,393 thousand US dollars, a moderate 5.3% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 8.5%, with an annualized growth rate of 2.7%. The peak value was in 2019 at 75,421 thousand US dollars, while the largest increase of 7.3% occurred in 2018.

Between 2017 and 2020, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates stood out as the main markets for exports in value terms. Japan represented 51.7% of exports, Hong Kong 12.5%, and the UAE 2.3%, collectively accounting for 66.4% of total flows.

In 2020, ASEAN's imports of prepared or preserved pork and offal reached 19,778 tonnes, showing a gradual 3.5% increase from 2019. However, from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 37.1%, with an annualized decline of 14.3%. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 19,104 tonnes, while the peak was in 2018 at 35,512 tonnes. The largest decline of 46.2% happened in 2019, and the largest increase of 13.0% was recorded in 2018.

During 2017-2020, China and the United States dominated ASEAN's imports in volume terms, consistently making up 90.3% of the total. This high concentration highlights a long tail of smaller markets playing a minor role.

In 2020, ASEAN's imports of prepared or preserved pork and offal in value terms totaled 91,565 thousand US dollars, a significant 45.9% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 57.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.2%. The largest decline of 16.0% was recorded in 2019.
