Earlier Report Observations

The African market for prepared or preserved pineapples began the period at 166 thousand tons in 2018 but experienced a sharp contraction the following year. Reduced rainfall in Côte d'Ivoire, a key producing country, limited pineapple harvests and contributed to lower overall supply, while export volumes from the region increased.

Market volume showed a temporary recovery in 2021 before declining again to 86 thousand tons by 2023. Persistent dry conditions in Côte d'Ivoire continued to constrain production. During this time, Togo approved a significant investment plan for 2024-2028 aimed at doubling local pineapple output, targeting future market expansion.

Internationally, changing European consumer preferences towards the MD2 pineapple variety influenced export dynamics. Furthermore, the Benin pineapple 'Pain de Sucre' secured a Protected Geographical Indication in 2020, enhancing its recognition and potential on global markets.
