Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, Malaysia's production of non-rendered pig fat free of lean meat began a steady decline, with market volume dropping from 24,238 t in 2018 to 21,719 t in 2021. This contraction was initially driven by regulatory measures such as the Shah Alam City Council's ban on selling pork and non-halal food at night markets, which limited consumer access. Enhanced veterinary controls and farm-level management of pigs introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2021 further constrained production.

The downward trend continued through 2022 and 2023, with local authorities in Shah Alam and Melaka imposing fines and denying licenses for pork sales at night markets, tightening distribution channels. Despite the overall market shrinkage to 16,869 t in 2023, a niche segment emerged as non-halal restaurants gained attention for serving nasi kandar and nasi lemak with pork. Simultaneously, raids on supermarkets for mixing halal and pork products highlighted ongoing regulatory scrutiny, and ex-farm price monitoring reflected concerns over supply.

Imports rose significantly from 182 t in 2018 to 1,027 t in 2023, partially offsetting the decline in domestic production. The regulatory environment remained stringent, with price control schemes for pork during festive seasons introduced in 2024, affecting farm-level supply management and indicating continued government intervention in the market.
