However, in 2020, the market contracted to 256.0 thousand tonnes due to disruptions in global supply chains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The market further declined to 241.1 thousand tonnes in 2021, but then surged by 32% to 319.0 thousand tonnes in 2022. This sharp rebound was driven by the continued easing of U.S. import restrictions, new food safety legislation, and increased investments by local meat companies in modernizing production and cold storage facilities, which facilitated a significant rise in imports.

In 2023, the market volume fell again to 266.1 thousand tonnes, as global conflicts and ongoing supply chain bottlenecks affected meat prices and availability, prompting efforts to enhance food security through import source diversification.
