Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the Gabonese government established the Gabonese Food Safety Agency (AGASA) to control food products and limit meat imports, while ministerial visits to large poultry farms addressed infrastructure gaps and import competition. This policy continued in 2019 with a plan to cut food imports by at least 5% annually. However, the poultry market volume grew to 89 746 t in 2019, driven mainly by higher imports. By 2020, the focus on reducing imports led to a drop in imports to 78 109 t, causing the total market volume to fall to 86 252 t despite a slight rise in domestic production to 8 144 t.

The market expanded sharply in 2021 by 12.8% to 97 302 t, primarily due to a surge in imports to 89 060 t, while local production increased to 8 308 t alongside ongoing structuring of the poultry sector with AGASA's support. In 2022, the market stabilized at 97 493 t as a 1.9% increase in poultry prices, linked to local and international economic factors, likely restrained consumption. Collaboration with the African Development Bank aimed to structure the sector and reduce imports. In 2023, the market volume declined by 6.7% to 91 001 t as imports fell to 82 629 t, while production rose to 8 374 t. During the year, a memorandum with the FAO for post-harvest management and marketing, along with foreign investor visits, indicated continued efforts to develop the sector.
