This expansion coincided with the ongoing work of the Poultry Liaison Committee, established earlier to coordinate stakeholders and support sector development. During this period, declining beef export earnings highlighted broader shifts in the meat industry that may have reinforced poultry demand.

Market volume contracted to 7 904 metric tons in 2021 before recovering to 8 705 metric tons in 2022, the year Botswana announced it had achieved self-sufficiency in chicken meat. This declaration came alongside government investments aimed at enhancing livestock processing capacity, including plans for the Tsabong multi-species abattoir. The market then settled at 8 393 metric tons in 2023.
