Poultry meat and offal market in Bahrain

The poultry meat market in Bahrain grew from 73,000 t in 2018 to a peak of 78,000 t in 2020, supported by rising imports which exceeded 63,800 t that year while domestic production remained around 18,000 t.

A sharp contraction occurred in 2021, with market volume falling to 61,000 t as imports dropped to 51,500 t and exports surged to nearly 7,000 t. In November of that year, the National Poultry Company entered a partnership with the Americana Group to develop local production capacity and supply fresh, high-quality poultry products, a strategic move aimed at strengthening the domestic supply base.

Market volume recovered to 73,000 t in 2022 and moderated to 71,000 t in 2023. By 2024, imports climbed to 68,000 t, coinciding with government measures including the disbursement of meat support allowances to low-income families and changes in the availability of fresh meat following the halt of live local meat sales at the Central Manama Market.

Bahrain's poultry meat and offal production has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 14 592 tonnes, which represents an 18.2% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 18.3%, averaging an annual decline of 6.5%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 18 082 tonnes, with that year also seeing the largest increase of 1.3%.

In 2020, Bahrain exported 481 tonnes of poultry meat and offal, a significant increase of 38.6% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 11.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.7%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 347 tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 522 tonnes. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 33.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait were consistently the main destinations for Bahrain's poultry meat and offal exports in volume terms. Saudi Arabia accounted for 40.5% of exports, Iraq for 15.6%, and Kuwait for 12.3%. Together, these three countries represented 68.4% of total export flows.

The market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. The lowest export value was recorded in 2017, while the highest was in 2020, with the peak value being 2.3 times higher than the trough. In 2020, Bahrain's poultry meat and offal exports reached 2.2 million US dollars, marking a substantial increase of 73.8% from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 38.2%, while the most significant increase was in 2018, rising by 118.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Kuwait remained the principal buyers of Bahrain's poultry meat and offal in value terms. Saudi Arabia accounted for 41.1% of export value, the United States for 18.5%, and Kuwait for 12.3%. Collectively, these three markets represented 71.9% of total export value.

Bahrain's poultry meat and offal imports have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 63 813 tonnes, showing a moderate rise of 9.0% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 23.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and China continued to be the leading suppliers of poultry meat and offal to Bahrain in volume terms. Brazil accounted for 50.1% of imports, Saudi Arabia for 15.9%, and China for 12.2%. Together, these three countries made up 78.2% of total import volume.

Bahrain's poultry meat and offal import value has increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports totalled 122.3 million US dollars, reflecting a moderate gain of 3.5% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, import value rose by 18.8%, averaging an annual increase of 5.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and China were the main sources in the geographical breakdown of Bahrain's poultry meat and offal imports in value terms. Brazil accounted for 43.9% of import value, Saudi Arabia for 29.1%, and China for 11.6%. Combined, these three countries represented 84.6% of total import flows.
