In 2018, the Czech fresh potato market volume stood at 749.2 thousand tons. Growth to 822.9 thousand tons in 2019 and a further increase to 908.8 thousand tons in 2020 occurred against a backdrop of state support measures for producers through market regulations and SZIF programs, which helped stabilize supply despite a long-term trend of declining planting areas.

From 2021, the market began to contract, falling to 842.1 thousand tons, driven by shifts in consumer preferences towards processed potato products and rising labor costs due to inflation. In 2022, a reduction in potato planting area to 21,680 hectares decreased supply, and in 2023, extreme climatic conditions, including droughts and excessive rainfall, negatively impacted the harvest, leading to a further decline in market volume to 729.6 thousand tons.

In 2024, potato planting area increased by 7.9% after several years of decline, yet factors such as volatility in input costs, heightened storage requirements due to climatic instability, and ongoing changes in consumer demand continue to influence the market.

Potato production in Czechia increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, 696.2 thousand tonnes of potatoes were produced, marking a significant gain of 11.8% compared to 2019. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 583.6 thousand tonnes, which represented the largest decline of 15.3% during this period.

Potato exports from Czechia declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 17.9 thousand tonnes, down by 28.3% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 57.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 25.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovakia and Austria remained the key destinations for Czech potato exports, jointly accounting for 88.6% of total export volumes. Other trading partners were much less significant individually during this period.

The value of potato exports from Czechia declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 7 019 thousand US dollars, which is 30.8% lower year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export values decreased by 39.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.5%.

Potato imports to Czechia increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Czechia imported 230.5 thousand tonnes of potatoes, marking a modest uptick of 2.3% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 12.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.0%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 202.3 thousand tonnes, which represented the largest decline of 1.3% during this period. The largest increase occurred in 2019 with growth of 11.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany (63.3% of import volumes), France (14.0%), and the Netherlands (5.9%) were the main sources of potato imports to Czechia, together accounting for 83.2% of total import flows.
