Production of fresh or chilled beans in China increased from 18 258 тыс. т in 2018 to 18 888 тыс. т in 2020. This growth was primarily driven by the US-China trade friction, which sharply reduced soybean imports and increased reliance on domestic production. In response, the Chinese government rolled out producer subsidies and other support policies to encourage farmers to expand soybean planting area.

After peaking in 2020, production experienced a slight dip in 2021 to 18 569 тыс. т, then modestly recovered to 18 672 тыс. т in 2022 and 18 709 тыс. т in 2023. Although the government continued to promote soybean planting through crop rotation subsidies and strip intercropping incentives, many farmers faced growing per-mu losses, which tempered further expansion. The temporary return to profitability in 2021 did not last, contributing to the plateau in output.

By 2023, policy emphasis shifted toward breeding high-oil, high-yield varieties and reducing soybean meal use in animal feed, as outlined in the 'Plan to Accelerate the Construction of an Agricultural Power (2024-2035)'. For 2024, market attention turned to international factors such as weather-related planting delays in South America and high fertilizer costs stemming from geopolitical conflicts, which could influence future planting decisions.
