The volume of the Portland cement market in Slovakia showed significant volatility between 2018 and 2024. After growing to nearly 2.5 million tonnes in 2019, domestic consumption declined over the following two years, stabilizing around 2.0 million tonnes by 2021.

A sharp contraction occurred in 2022 when the market volume fell to 1.3 million tonnes. This was followed by a recovery in 2023 and 2024, with the market reaching 1.7 million tonnes by the end of the period. Throughout these years, domestic production fluctuated while imports steadily decreased and exports remained at a high level.

The net result was a domestic market heavily influenced by production and trade flows, with the overall volume in 2024 remaining below the peaks observed earlier in the period.

Portland cement production in Slovakia increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 290.9 million US dollars, marking a moderate 5.4% rise compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 25.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.0%.

After two years of growth, Slovakia's portland cement production volume declined. In 2020, 3 891 thousand tonnes were produced, representing a slight 2.2% decrease from 2019. Slovakia exported 2 262 thousand tonnes of portland cement in 2020, a 6.8% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports rose by 5.9%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 1.9%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 118 thousand tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 3.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Hungary, Austria, and Czechia were the main destinations for Slovakia's portland cement exports in kind. Hungary accounted for 57.5% of exports, Austria for 19.1%, and Czechia for 13.8%, together making up 90.4% of total flows.

Portland cement shipments to Slovakia from abroad declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Slovakia imported approximately 411 thousand tonnes, a 33.8% year-on-year fall. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 20.8%, with an average annual decline of 7.5%. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 635 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 22.4%.

Slovakia's volume of portland cement imports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 38.2 million US dollars, a robust 19.3% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 5.2%, equating to an annualized decline of 1.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 47.8 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 18.5%.
