In 2018, industry efforts focused on improving meat quality traits such as pH, drip loss, and intramuscular fat to develop specialty products based on high-quality raw materials, which may have supported demand for domestically produced pork.

The market peaked in 2021 at 144.3 thousand tons, coinciding with Norway's high level of self-sufficiency in meat production where pork and poultry were the most produced and consumed types. Increased pork imports, reaching 12.7 thousand tons that year, contributed to the larger market volume. However, the market contracted in the following years, returning to approximately 129.6 thousand tons by 2023.

By 2025, market conditions were shaped by regulatory adjustments, including a reduced turnover tax on pork and higher slaughter prices, which encouraged producers. Looking at the broader 2018-2021 period, production decreased by 2.3%, which translates to an average annual decline of 0.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 131 000 tons, while the most significant drop occurred in 2019 with a 3.7% decrease.

Norway's pork exports declined for the second straight year in 2021. Export volumes reached 2 597 tons, representing a substantial 20.4% reduction compared to the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports fell by 24.2%, averaging an 8.8% annual decline. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 665 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 6.9%.

From 2018 to 2021, Denmark, Ukraine, and Sweden emerged as Norway's primary pork export partners by volume. Denmark accounted for 41.6% of exports, followed by Ukraine at 13.5% and Sweden at 11.1%. Together, these three countries represented 66.2% of Norway's total pork export flows during this period.
