Earlier Report Observations

The pork market volume in Norway fluctuated at the start of the period, declining to 129.6 thousand tons in 2019 before recovering to 134.0 thousand tons in 2020. In 2018, industry efforts focused on improving meat quality traits such as pH, drip loss, and intramuscular fat to develop specialty products based on high-quality raw materials, which may have supported demand for domestically produced pork.

The market peaked in 2021 at 144.3 thousand tons, coinciding with Norway's high level of self-sufficiency in meat production where pork and poultry were the most produced and consumed types. Increased pork imports, reaching 12.7 thousand tons that year, contributed to the larger market volume. However, the market contracted in the following years, returning to approximately 129.6 thousand tons by 2023.

By 2025, market conditions were shaped by regulatory adjustments, including a reduced turnover tax on pork and higher slaughter prices, which encouraged producers. Significant pork imports continued to affect the competitiveness of domestic product, while consumer preferences showed steady demand for Norwegian pork when available.
