Earlier Report Observations

The pork market volume in Mauritius experienced considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. It grew from 1 711 t in 2018 to a peak of 1 966 t in 2022, before contracting sharply to 858 t in 2023. This decline was primarily driven by a steep drop in imports, which fell by 79% from 1 383 t in 2022 to 288 t in 2023.

Domestic pork production remained relatively stable throughout the period, fluctuating between 573 t and 600 t annually. In 2023, output edged down slightly to 572 t. That same year, the Mauritian government introduced support measures for pig farmers, including subsidies for animal purchases and feed, as well as loan cancellations worth Rs 71 million to stimulate the sector. However, producers faced challenges in selling to high-end hotels and residences, which demand specific cuts and higher quality meat.

Consumer demand for pork in Mauritius has been rising, supported by shifting dietary preferences. To meet this demand, the country has relied heavily on imports, notably from France. Imports rebounded to 1 093 t in 2024, underscoring the ongoing dependency on foreign supplies to balance the market.
