The chicken meat and offal market in Mauritius expanded from 49 000 t in 2018 to 59 000 t in 2023, driven by consistently rising consumption as chicken became the preferred meat for its affordability and perception as a healthier alternative to red meat. Local producers, including key player Inicia, increased output to meet this growing demand, with domestic production rising notably from 2021 onward.

Market volume peaked in 2019 before a temporary contraction in 2020. Growth resumed strongly from 2022, accelerated by periodic festive-season shortages that highlighted the need for reliable local supply. Consumer preference for fresh over frozen chicken further supported domestic production, with imports playing only a marginal role.

In 2023, chicken consumption rose by 6.7%, prompting another significant increase in local production. Producers successfully adapted their offerings to cater to the strong consumer preference for fresh meat, consolidating the market's expansion throughout the period.

Mauritius's chicken meat and offal production volume declined after two consecutive years of growth. In 2020, the country produced 47 500 tonnes, marking a 6.9% decrease from the previous year. Production had peaked in 2019 at 51 000 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 4.1%.
