Mauritian consumers' preference for frozen imported meat, particularly from South Africa and Australia due to lower prices, supported import flows. The following year, imports surged to 49.6 thousand kg, doubling the market volume to 100.2 thousand kg, reflecting heavy reliance on imported meat while local production held steady.

Market volume dropped sharply to 50.6 thousand kg in 2020 as imports nearly vanished, falling to just 64 kg. Production remained at 50.6 thousand kg. A slight recovery occurred in 2021, with imports rising to 2.9 thousand kg and market volume reaching 53.1 thousand kg.

From March 2022, a new French law requiring restaurants to display the origin of meat potentially affected import and distribution practices, coinciding with a market volume of 50.2 thousand kg. In 2023, increased consumption of poultry meat linked to a growing preference for lean, protein-rich animal proteins supported a rise in market volume to 51.1 thousand kg.
