Earlier Report Observations

The Lithuanian pork market faced significant competitive pressure from imported EU products, particularly from Poland, due to differing VAT rates and market conditions in 2018-2019. This contributed to a decline in domestic production and overall market volume by 2019. However, the outbreak of African Swine Fever in China in 2019 boosted EU-wide pork exports, raising purchase prices in Lithuania and stabilizing market value despite lower physical volume. Market volume then recovered sharply in 2020 and reached a peak of 146 236 t in 2021, expanding by over 25% from the 2019 low.

From 2022 onward, market volume contracted but was accompanied by a substantial increase in market value, driven by investments in quality and supply chain modernization. Major processors like Rivona (part of the Norfa group) upgraded facilities to supply higher-quality fresh pork, while retail chains expanded fresh meat departments and logistics to meet growing consumer demand for fresh products and quick delivery. This shift toward premium offerings, coupled with broader food price inflation—though pork prices rose more slowly than beef or poultry—pushed the market value to a record 440.0 million USD in 2023. By 2024-2025, the market entered an evolutionary phase with falling purchase prices, supply chain diversification, and adaptation to international trends.
