Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2019, Guyana's pork market volume expanded significantly from 608 to 1,016 tonnes. This surge was supported by the emergence of new processed pork product segments, which stimulated household demand. However, the local pig herd had begun declining from 2018, establishing a persistent constraint on domestic production capacity.
After a contraction to 815 tonnes in 2020, the market recovered to 1,000 tonnes in 2021 as consumer preferences continued shifting from fresh 'raw' pork to processed fresh pork products. In 2022, despite economic and sanitary crises affecting European pork production, the market grew further to 1,078 tonnes, with the Rémire-Montjoly slaughterhouse remaining central to local processing. By 2023, a sharp rise in imports to 277 tonnes compensated for a drop in domestic output, driving the market to a record 1,205 tonnes even amid a reported downturn in global pork trade.
Looking ahead, local production is projected at around 800 tonnes of carcasses for 2024 but remains insufficient for territorial self-sufficiency, indicating continued reliance on imported pork, with import volumes shown to increase substantially through 2025.
