Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2023, the market volume for plums and sloes in Tunisia increased from 11 400 t to 16 695 t, though not steadily. Initial growth to 18 521 t by 2020 was followed by a contraction in 2021 and 2022, influenced by variable annual production and export patterns. Plum cultivation in Tunisia spans 1 500 to 2 000 hectares, with an average yield of 10 t/ha, making output highly dependent on climatic conditions each year.
In 2021, coordinated efforts to prepare the export season, notably toward Libya, included professional workshops and participation in the Tripoli International Fair. This focus on export markets coincided with a rise in shipments, reducing domestic availability. The following year, April frosts in the Southwest caused yield losses ranging from 0 to 100% on some farms, particularly affecting early plum varieties, while Libya remained the destination for 64% of Tunisia’s fruit exports, further tightening local supply.
By 2023, market volume recovered to 16 695 t as production reached 20 777 t and exports moderated. Climate-related supply shocks continued to affect availability, as seen in June 2024 when wholesale prices rose 33% due to lower plum quantities on the market.
