Earlier Report Observations

Following a decline in 2019, pig offal production in Eastern Africa rebounded strongly, rising from 33 105 t in 2019 to 40 266 t in 2020. This recovery aligned with government interventions in Rwanda aimed at developing inclusive and sustainable pig value chains to boost meat output and with research in Tanzania focused on improving pig diets and smallholder productivity, which directly supported higher production volumes.

The expansion continued through 2023, with production reaching 51 797 t. The growth was further supported by the advocacy and organization efforts of the Tanzania Association of Pig Farmers (TAPIFA) and by Rwanda's ongoing programs to enhance the profitability of smallholder pig farming through better feed and management practices. By 2024, initiatives like Kenya's piglet distribution project and Rwanda's Enabel PRISM project underscored sustained institutional focus on developing the pig sector, which helped maintain the market's upward trajectory.
