Earlier Report Observations

Between 2019 and 2021, the German phosphorus market saw fluctuations in volume and value. In 2020, market volume fell to 35 225 t, down 3.1% from the previous year, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused demand shocks and production disruptions. The market's value also declined to $124.1 million. However, in 2021, volume rebounded to 37 765 t, a 7.2% increase, while value rose to $141.0 million. This recovery was driven by the European Union and Germany seeking alternative supply sources amid rising global phosphorus fertilizer prices, which were exacerbated by trade restrictions and sanctions against key suppliers like Belarus.

The market shifted dramatically in 2022. Despite an 8.8% drop in physical volume to 34 424 t, the market's value surged by 29.4% to $182.5 million due to sharply higher fertilizer prices fueled by geopolitical tensions from the Ukraine war. These pressures continued into 2023, leading to a sharp contraction: market volume plummeted by 45.7% to 18 697 t, and value fell to $116.1 million. High prices and supply constraints significantly reduced imports, which fell from 33 723 t in 2022 to 17 982 t in 2023.

By 2024, the market showed signs of stabilization, with value edging up to $117.6 million. Underlying this trend were growing segments such as LED phosphors, supported by new technological innovations from companies like Toshiba and regulatory standards for energy-efficient lighting, as well as increased demand for sustainable phosphorus sources and organic fertilizers, with companies like Yara International introducing new environmentally friendly products.
