Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for pebbles, gravel, and crushed stone in Austria first grew from 46 472 thousand tonnes to 47 153 thousand tonnes in 2019, then contracted to 45 826 thousand tonnes in 2020. Throughout this period, gravel remained the most significant domestic construction raw material, essential for concrete and road building, with the industry relying on locally available natural resources to reduce transport distances and fuel consumption.

By 2023, market volume had further decreased to 41 840 thousand tonnes, while the market value rose to 506.8 million US dollars, reflecting higher construction material prices. This shift was driven by regulatory changes, including a landfill ban for mineral construction waste effective from January 2024, which accelerated the adoption of recycled aggregates. The revised Gravel-Stone Index, launched in early 2024, provided greater price transparency for stone products after significant price increases in 2021 and 2022.

The market also saw increased demand for high-recycling-content products, with major producers like Rohrdorfer supplying a full range of concrete and aggregates. The construction sector experienced a cautious recovery in 2024, with stable material prices and improved order volumes supporting demand for aggregates.
