A trend toward building greening, highlighted in the Green Market Report Austria from 2019, began to generate increased demand for sustainable construction materials, including stone products. Global supply chain issues and raw material shortages emerging in 2020 started to put upward pressure on construction material prices.

The market expanded sharply to 9.9 million tons in 2021, a rise of 1.9 million tons from the previous year. This surge was linked to strengthened demand for stone materials used in green roofs and facades, as the building greening sector grew substantially within the sustainable construction trend. Continued supply chain disruptions influenced costs but did not curb the overall consumption growth.

By 2022, construction material prices had risen by 16% due to persistent global supply chain problems and raw material scarcity, contributing to a market volume contraction to 9.2 million tons. The decline continued into 2023, with the market falling to 8.2 million tons as it adjusted to higher price levels and shifting demand. A stabilization followed in 2024, with a slight recovery to 8.3 million tons as prices and production volumes leveled out after the earlier volatility.
