Earlier Report Observations
After reaching 14.9 thousand tons in 2018, the Syrian fresh peas market contracted to 12.7 thousand tons in 2019. This decline was driven by rising agricultural production costs and a lack of government support, which reduced farmers' incentives to maintain output. The market rebounded strongly in 2020, expanding to 15.4 thousand tons, aided by state programs that facilitated agricultural exports and eased financial burdens on producers. Growth continued into 2021, with volume climbing to 17.1 thousand tons, supported by the spread of popular markets that enabled direct sales from farmers to consumers, improving distribution and stimulating demand.
The positive trend reversed in 2022, as market volume fell back to 13.9 thousand tons. Although the government launched a long-term National Agricultural Strategy that year aiming to enhance food security, short-term challenges contributed to the contraction. In 2023, production recovered sharply to 17.0 thousand tons, marking a new peak for the period as the sector demonstrated resilience.
